ONCE UPON A TIME... STORYTELLING AS A WAY TO COMMUNICATE RESEARCH

At a time when dissemination of scientific research is constantly highlighted as a fundamental aspect for academics to actually produce an impact in the wider community, storytelling represents an opportunity to effectively communicate science to non-academic audiences. Representing research in compelling, storied ways though, is often considered a difficult task by many scholars, who might be daunted by the creative aspects and literary skills required for compelling storytelling.

  

This workshop aims to facilitate the use of storytelling to communicate research in two ways. Firstly, it will review and explore different ways of telling stories, from creative nonfiction to visual storytelling. Secondly, it will provide participants with practical suggestions for creative writing and will encourage ‘playing’ with various types of creative analytical practices, to experience, reflect upon, and discuss how different ways of storytelling can influence an audience.

Dr Francesca Cavallerio is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology in the School of Psychology and Sport Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University.
